Although by now the band needs no introduction, their seamless and hypnotic blend of 'psych-rock reggae dub and soul' has been winning hearts and minds across NZ (and elsewhere) since 1998. When the band split in 2005, no one could foresee the breadth and depth of the legacy they left behind. The rapturous critical and popular acclaim that followed their 2010 reunion and accompanying film Music Is Choice left no doubt that they were and remain one of NZ's best loved bands.
TrinityRoots are founding members Warren Maxwell (Fat Freddy's Drop, Little Bushman), Rio Hunuki-Hemopo (Breaks Co-op, Fat Freddy's Drop) and recent addition and honourary 'little sister' Jean Pompey on drums. Of their latest addition Maxwell states that “… Jean has brought a fantastic dynamic to the band, especially being a woman. It's given us a new, different kind of perspective.”
Of their forthcoming smaller-scale Easter shows, Rio is effusive: “The Sawmill have supported TrinityRoots since the early days and we can't wait to come back and play there again!”, and it is difficult to imagine a more appropriate venue to catch this newly reinvigorated band
About Trinity Roots: TrinityRoots comprised of three of New Zealand’s most acclaimed artists – Warren Maxwell (lead vocals/guitars/keys), Rio Hunuki-Hemopo (bass/vocals) and Riki Gooch (drums/vocals)– who together embodied the New Zealand groove that was ground breaking in Aotearoa’s roots scene.
During their 7 years together, TrinityRoots created a large and loyal fan base through hypnotic live performances which included evocative rhythms and harmonies steeped in a lineage of soul, reggae and roots that transcend the boundaries defined by genre.
Indigenous, organic and utterly unique,
their music was captured on their self-titled EP (2000) and two albums - True (2002) and Home, Land and Sea (2004).
