Dj Cian & Dj T-Rice

at The Neighbourhood, 498 New North Road, Kingsland
Originally from England Cian O'Donnell has been DJing since 1989 in various spots around the globe. Due to working in record shops since leaving school Cians sound covers a wide variety of musical genres. A typical 3 hour set can take in dub/reggae, hip hop, downtempo beats, latin/Brazilian, broken beats, funk, soul and dancefloor jazz — depending to whom and where he's playing.
Landed in Wellington in 1988 and promoted numerous parties and events with the likes of Mu (Fat Freddy's Drop), Koa (Roots Foundation), and Leon Surynt (Matterhorn owner). Moved up to Auckland in the mid 90's to help set up the Khuja Lounge and become the resident DJ 4 nights a week.
In 1996 Cian worked for the infamous "Groove Merchant" record store in San Francisco (original home of the Ubiquity, Luv n' Haight and Cubop record labels) and also did promotions and compiled and liscensed the "Virtual Brasilia" compilation for Cosmic Flux Musiq. Whilst in San Francisco he was Djing regularly and held down two monthly residencies at 111 Minna Street Art Gallery and a spot in the latino district. During numerous visits to the US he's ended up spinning in New York at APT, Washington DC and Vancouver.
On Aotearoan shores he's supported everyone from Kenny Dope, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Gilles Peterson, Derrick May, Kid Loco, Blackalicious, Norman Jay, Benji B, Kid Koala, Theo Parrish and a whole heap of others.
More recently he set up Conch Records with Brent Hollands, a record store specializing in independent hip-hop, Jamaican 7's, European electronica, house, soul, funk, jazz etc.
Along with Manuel Bundy and Submariner he hosts the popular monthly Turnaround event and writes the accompanying leaflet. - Web
